Morris Sher opens a small retail clothing store serving families with limited credit options. His unique business model allows customers to take immediate delivery of greatly needed items while making small payments over time. Growing his business through loyal patronage, Morris develops a talent for collecting outstanding balances while maintaining his customer relationships.
After returning from service in WWII, Morris expands the business in Birmingham, Alabama, and changes the name to King Kredit. Continuing to work with those that had been denied credit elsewhere, Morris perfects his customer-centric collection approach while expanding his loyal customer base.
Following in their father’s footsteps, sons David and Martin Sher, take over the family business at King Kredit and further expand it to include financed sale of home furnishings. The company changes its name to Mr. King Furniture.
David and Martin Sher embark on a new business venture in credit and collections. They found AmChex, a collection agency serving local retail businesses in Birmingham.
AmChex
is recognized as the largest accounts receivable agency in the region, by the Birmingham Business Journal, and the Regional Birmingham Chamber of Commerce names David Sher & Martin Sher as the Small Business Persons of the Year.
To honor its family history and reduce association with check authorization companies, AmChex
ultimately changes its name to AmSher
Collection Services.
AmSher’s
first national client, PowerTel, is acquired as a subsidiary of VoiceStream Wireless, Inc., a large telecommunications company which was acquired by T-Mobile the following year. This represents the beginning of a heavy focus and strong presence in telecommunications receivables.
After holding numerous executive positions with West Asset Management, Risk Management Alternatives, AT&T Universal Card, GC Services, and CitiCorp Credit Services, John Sams becomes President of AmSher.
Martin Sher authors the Collector’s Pledge, promoting respectful behavior and common courtesy as cornerstones in the credit and collection industry. Adopted and published by ACA International, tens of thousands of ACA members and debt collectors across the nation, have now pledged to honor the principles first established at AmSher.
After working closely with AmSher
as a client through his time with T-Mobile, Chuck Stigers joins the AmSher
team as its Vice President of Business Development.
Tremendous client growth serves as the springboard for expansion. After launching a secondary nearshore facility in Panama City, Panama, AmSher relocates its corporate headquarters to a larger site in Hoover, Alabama. Seth DeForest is promoted to President of AmSher
and Dena DeForest is hired as its Chief Administrative Officer.
